Parallel parking can be one of the most intimidating skills for new drivers to master, but with the right technique and a bit of practice, it becomes a simple and stress-free process. At Guidelines Driving School, we’re here to help you build confidence behind the wheel, starting with the essentials of parallel parking. Follow these step-by-step instructions to perfect your technique:
Look for a parking space that is at least one and a half times the length of your car. Ensure the space is legal and free of obstructions. Turn on your indicator to signal your intent to park.
Pull up beside the car in front of the space you want to park in, leaving about 2-3 feet of space between the two vehicles. Align your rear bumper with the rear bumper of the other car.
Shift into reverse and check your surroundings for other vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians. Slowly start backing up while turning your steering wheel fully toward the curb. Keep an eye on your mirrors and the space around you.
Once the rear of your car is about halfway into the parking space, straighten the steering wheel and continue reversing. This will help align your car parallel to the curb.
When your car is nearly in the space, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction to bring the front of the car into the space. Continue reversing slowly until your vehicle is aligned parallel to the curb and within a reasonable distance (about 6-12 inches).
Put your car in park and ensure it is centered in the space and not sticking out into traffic. Double-check that you are not blocking driveways, fire hydrants, or crosswalks.
Like any driving skill, parallel parking gets easier with practice. Find a quiet street or parking lot to hone your skills before trying it in busier areas.
By following these steps and staying patient, you’ll soon be parallel parking like a pro.
